Studies on Overcoming Self - incompatibility of Several Chinese Cabbage and Radish Parent Lines

Abstract
The effectiveness as well as the economical feasibility of CO©ü gas treatment on selfed seed production was investigated in several Chinese cabbage and radish parent lines possessing different self-incompatible genotypes. Flowers were self-pollinated and exposed to 5% CO©ü for 2 hours, initiating 5 hours after pollination. The reactions to CO©ü treatment varied greatly depending upon the genotype, ranging from even better than bud pollination to totally ineffective. Slight variations in CO©ü effect were observed between growing season, individual plant within a strain, and individual flower stalk within a plant, but these variations did not appear to exceed, in any case, the variations caused by the genotype. It is apparent that the seed production method using CO©ü gas can greatly reduce the production cost of selfed seeds as compared to that of conventional bud pollination in many self-incompatible parent lines of Chinese cabbage.
